1697 Hennepin, Louis de - (1640–c.1705) born in Belgium; became a Catholic priest and missionary of the Franciscan Récollet order and an explorer of the interior of North America, arriving in 1675; traveled with La Salle on the 1679-81 expedition, during which time he is known to have passed through the Chicagou site. Represented here is a detail from his map Carte d’un tres grand pais nouvellement decouvert dans l`Amerique Septentrionale, Utrecht.
