1703 La Hontan, Louis Armand de Lom D`Arce - (1666-c.1715) Lahontan came to New France in 1683 as a young lieutenant and served under Governor La Barre in an expedition against the Iroquois the following year; spent 10 years warring against the Indians and later commanding posts in the west under Governors Denonville and Frontenac. While stationed at Fort Saint Joseph on the St. Clair River, Lahontan explored the Mississippi along with areas of Wisconsin and Minnesota.
