1705 Lahontan, Louis Armand de Lom D`Arce - Lahontan came to Canada in 1683 as a seventeen year-old lieutenant to serve under Governor La Bare in his expedition against the Iroquois the following year; spent ten years in Canada warring against the Indians and commanding posts in the west under Governors La Barre, Denonville, and Frontenac. While stationed at Fort Saint Joseph on the St. Clair River, Lahontan explored the Mississippi along with areas of Wisconsin and Minnesota. His Carte Generale de Canada was the first such map to become generally available to the public. [3b]
